Once a suitable savings account has been chosen, the next most important step is to ensure that the account is well managed. The days of heading into the local branch to carry out transactions are increasingly replaced by online banking.
Although some are still put off by the possible risk of online fraud and security issues, an increasing number of customers now opt to bank online as it allows them to have full control of their banking from the comfort of their home, cutting out bank queues in the process.
Banks and building societies are also in favour of internet banking as it means less work for them and the savings in overheads made from running call centres instead of branches can be passed on to the customers.
Savings accounts can also be managed by branch, post or phone. Customers may well find that certain products are restricted to one or a number of these methods.
